Zamami Island

Zamami is another of the islands that are part of the Kerama Islands (as Tokashiki ) in the district of Shimajiri.

The people of Zamami is composed of the islands of Zamami, Aka, and Fukaji the Geruma which have a population of 955 inhabitants.

Zamami economy is based on tourism being snorkeling, diving and kayak the island's main activity.
Basically there are two main beaches on the island of Zamami, that of Furuzamami which has crystal clear water and lots of corals and numerous marine Ama beach where it is common to see turtles.

As to Tokashiki, Zamami to be taking a ferry from Tomarin (Naha) it takes 2 hours or an express ferry from Tomarin also only takes 50 min. Tickets can be booked from here .

Once at the port of Zamami can go by bus to the beach of Love and Furuzamami or take a taxi (the only one on the island) to go from beach to beach or go to the observatory is in the montanya Takatsuki, which has great views of the surrounding islands and beaches.

Another famous spots of the island is the statue of the dog Marilin, which is en route between the port and beach of Love.

In winter people come to this island to see the whales, as it is a transit of whales and there are many organized tours to go see them.

I went with Alberto and some friends from Okinawa to Zamami a couple of weeks, about 20 minutes walk to the beach of Love but once on the beach we reported that they would only turtles are often seen at high tide in the afternoon, and I took the taxi to the beach where we Furuzamami most of the day snorkeling with the equipment we rented on the beach and we had a great time as the waters are crystal clear and there are very many super coral to see.
A little before he left the ferry back we went by taxi to the observatory where there are fantastic views to finally walk back to the port. No doubt an island more than recommended to visit.

Naha Festival

The festival also known as Naha Tsunahiki Matsuri (festival of stretching the rope) is a festival held every year in early October in Naha (Okinawa). Originates from the 17th century and the main event of the festival takes place on 58th Street having a battle of tug of war between this team and the West.

This festival attracts about 25,000 people annually and is preceded by a parade on Kokusai Street.
In 1997 the event was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records for making the most "tug of war" in the world with a string that weighed 40 tons.

The festival involved many people in the garb typical of Okinawa and encouraging fighters stretching of the rope. You can also see some people dressed as the kings of Ryukuyan in the past represented the two teams.

The main rope 40 tons out many smaller strings something to be easier to pull them so you can stretch this great rope.
The battle lasts 30 minutes and the team that achieves moving the rope 15 meters or more have been moved to the line after 30 minutes is the winner.

This year the festival involved with Alberto and were a good time pulling the rope, until I started to get blisters on your hands. This year, like many others the rope did not move anywhere, so all ended in draws.

Here Alberto giving all :)

Tokashiki Island

Tokashiki Island is the largest island of the 20 islands that form the Kerama Islands in Okinawa and is part of Shimajiri district.
Tokashiki Island in Okinawa is famous for its clear waters, white sandy beaches and for its corals, so make it a perfect island for diving.

Tokashiki is located just 35km west of Naha having two types of ferry ranging from Naha to Tokashiki in just 70 or 35 minutes, so it makes a perfect destination for a day trip or two between beautiful beaches.

From the port of Tokashiki buses that lead to beaches and Tokashiki Aharen, these two beaches are the main beaches for tourism restaurants and many activities have already prepared sea coast beach for tourists.

I went with five co-workers two weeks ago and I had a great time. We went to the beach and rented Aharen some snorkeling goggles to dive a little and see a lot of fish just meters from the beach and rent some kayaks with which we go to smaller islands there around this.
