Old Hokkaido Government Building
Former Hokkaido Government Building (北海道庁旧本庁舎, Hokkaidōchō kyūhonchōsha) also known as Akarenga (red brick) building is a neo-baroque structure built in Sapporo American in 1888 as the basis for the administration of Hokkaido. It is the symbol of Hokkaido and was appointed as an important Japanese cultural asset in 1969.
Currently the building contains in its interior: a conference room, a museum, a tourist office, a few exhibition halls and a library. Visitors can enter the building for free.
Around the building there is a pool and gardens, in which some events are held on time.
In 1879 the building was destroyed by fire and was not rebuilt until 1886. In 1909 the building again suffered another fire, leaving the inside completely burned, but with its brick walls very little affected. In 1910 the building was rebuilt.
The measures of the building are 61 meters long, 36 meters wide and 33 feet high at the highest part of the tower.
