Doyou not ushi no hi

Today is the "Doyou not ushi no hi".
In ancient Japan, the year was divided into 24 months of 15 days each and every day had the name of an animal.
The Doyou "is the name of one of these 24 months and is a month that lasted 18 days. The "no hi ushi" is the day of the bull, and is now the month "Doyou" and on "ushi" of what there is of "no Doyou not ushi hi."

Doyou month is one of the hottest seasons of the year, so to beat the heat, the day is tradition to eat "Unagi (eel).
The anguilla say contains a lot of vitamin A and DHA, in what many call "brain food" because they say that you eat anguilla forces and recovers energy which is sorely lacking in us hot days.

Eel is eaten with rice, which is curiously what I ate two days ago in Kamogawa and I have dined today as well to the tradition.

Unagi I ate in Kamogawa.
