Asakusa is a district of Taito-ku, Tokyo known for being one of the few districts in Tokyo that Japan still maintain some of the old and especially its Sensou-ji Buddhist temple.

The most famous temple is the Asakusa Sensou-ji, as it is one of the oldest churches who meet in Tokyo. The temple dates from the year 645, but was bombed in World War II (1945), leaving much of the destroyed. The temple can be seen now is the reconstruction of this in 1958.

The front door leading to Sensou-ji is the famous gate called Kaminarimon (gate beam), which was also destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt in 1960. This door is guarded by the god of the wind on the left and the god of lightning on the right.

Just across the great door, you enter directly to the Nakamise shopping street, which is about 250 yards from the gate to the temple Kaminarimon Sensou-ji. The street is a street in a straight line which is composed of over 50 shops on both sides, in which items can be purchased in addition to traditional gifts of sweets and traditional food.
